Welcome January and Goodbye December! #WelcomeJanuary
Welcome January and Goodbye December! Say hello January with me! Welcome holidays and Happy new year, This, after all, was the month in which families began tightening and closing and sealing; from Thanksgiving to the New Year, everybody’s world contracted, day by day, into the microcosmic single festive household, each with its own rituals and obsessions, rules and dreams. You didn’t feel you could call people. They didn’t feel they could phone you. How does one cry for help from these seasonal prisons?
…January, in ermine cloak,
With crystal spangles dight,
He gave the queen an Ivy crown,
And her fair shoulders white
He happ’d with tender ferny Moss
From many a cosy nook,
Or from the rounded boulders warm
Beside the frozen brook.
The leaves hop, scraping on the ground.
It is deep January. The sky is hard.
The stalks are firmly rooted in ice.
It is in this solitude, a syllable,
Out of these gawky flitterings,
Intones its single emptiness,
The savagest hollow of winter-sound.
With bright or sombre gear,
With smile or frown or song,
In a masque the months go gliding
First January is here,
With eyes that keenly glow—
A frost-mailed warrior striding
A shadowy steed of snow…
