The Paramount Pictures logo is one of the most popular and instantly recognizable film studio logos in history. It comprises of a pyramidal mountain which has been the fundamental element since the logo’s inception in 1914. The logo is also considered the oldest surviving logos in Hollywood.
It has been suggested that the mountain originates from a sketch by W. W. Hodkinson, who drew it during a conference with Adolph Zukor. The pyramidal mountain, actually an illustration of The Ben Lomond Mountain, symbolizes the memories of Hodkinson’s early life in Utah. It has also been said that Peru’s Artesonraju is the mountain portrayed in the live-action Paramount Pictures logo.
The early version of the logo started as a charcoal representation of the mountain surrounded by 24 stars. It was later modified into a dull canvas in 1953. During the 1970s, the logo was further simplified and the number of stars was cut down to 22.
The Paramount Pictures logo was altered once again in 1987 – this time in collaboration with Apogee, Inc. – on the studio’s 75th Anniversary. Featuring lake and stars, the use of computer technology was witnessed for the first time. In 2002, another modernistic computer-generated logo was introduced for the second time, as part of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of Paramount Pictures.
